Most People Don't Fail Because They Aren't "Motivated Enough."
They fail because they never built a base that could support progress.
They jump straight into intensity.
They chase fatigue instead of capacity.
They confuse effort with structure.
The Matter Method was built to fix that.
This Foundation Phase sets the standards we expect before heavier loads, higher volume, or physique-specific work ever begins.
What is
The Matter Method?
The Matter Method is a standards-based approach to training built around progression, repeatability, and long-term capacity.
The Matter Method Focuses On:
-
Building a base before adding complexity
-
Understanding why things are prescribed
-
Developing self-awareness alongside physical output
It’s designed to hold up over time and evolve with you.
The Foundation Phase is where those standards begin.

What’s Included
Inside the Matter Method - Foundation Phase:
-
A 12-week structured training system broken into progressive phases
-
A clear weekly layout balancing strength, hypertrophy, conditioning, and recovery
-
Coaching notes that explain why things are prescribed, not just what to do
-
Built-in autoregulation using RIR and tempo so progress stays sustainable
-
A defined checkpoint system to assess readiness before progressing
You’ll receive:
-
A downloadable PDF for reference and education
-
PLUS full access to the program inside our training app, so you can log sessions, track progression, and follow the system exactly as intended. We included this as an added feature, as most only send PDFs of their programs at this price, but we would rather also give you the Matter Athletica HQ Experience.
This is not a static plan. It’s a method delivered in a format that makes it easiest to execute.

How The Foundation Phase Works
Phase 1: Build the Base (Weeks 1–4)
Training in Phase 1 should feel controlled and repeatable.
Sessions are challenging, but you should leave the gym with fuel in the tank.
By the end of Week 4:
-
Your lifts feel smoother and more stable
-
Conditioning feels easier at the same pace
-
Recovery between sets improves noticeably
This phase establishes the baseline:
-
foundational strength in key lifts
-
improved work capacity and aerobic support
-
consistent execution under structure
You should finish Phase 1 feeling more disciplined, more aware of your limits, and confident training within them.
Phase 2: Layer Strength & Capacity (Weeks 5–8)
-
Push heavier weights to develop foundational strength while maintaining and expanding hypertrophy through targeted accessory work.
-
Training intensity increases, but execution remains the priority.
-
Conditioning is progressed slightly to support work capacity without compromising recovery.
Phase 3: Refine & Express the Base (Weeks 9–12)
-
Refine your physique through hypertrophy-focused training while maintaining the strength built in Phase 2.
-
Metabolic stress and conditioning are increased to improve work capacity and body composition without sacrificing execution or recovery.
-
You should finish this phase leaner, fitter, sharper, and more in control of your training than when you started.
Who is This For?
This Foundation Phase is for you if:
-
You want to train hard with structure and intent
-
You’re willing to earn intensity through proper execution and progression
-
You care about pushing performance long-term, not just chasing fatigue/pumps from volume-only workout plans.
-
You want to understand when to push and when to hold back, and why that matters.
-
You’re ready to build a base that can support real intensity long term and set the standard you can build everything from.
Who This Is Not For
This isn’t the right fit if:
-
Intensity to you only means seeking a pump every session
-
You prefer novelty, quick-change programs over progression
-
You don’t want to track, refine, or improve execution
-
You’re looking for short-term changes that don't hold long-term results.
There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just not how we train our clients.

Working with Ben at Matter Athletica has been one of the easiest and best decisions I’ve made when it comes to choosing a prep coach. His work ethic, knowledge, attention to detail, and ability to tailor everything to my
needs and constantly take and apply feedback on the go meant that both preps I have completed under him have been as smooth as can be expected. What sets Ben apart is his ability to lead by example in his own journey, his passion for the sport, and his clients. He pushed me to achieve more and instilled confidence, but also ensured I entered prep for the right reasons (my why) and with clear expectations.
My health and mindset were always considered when entering prep, throughout, and importantly, post comp. The structure, accountability, and constant support made
the process not only effective but enjoyable. I’ve presented improved physical results each time, but I’ve also built confidence and discipline that carry over into every part of my life. I can’t recommend Matter Athletica highly enough for anyone serious about taking their physique and performance to the next level. - Tom A
