Welcome! Chances are, if you are training here, then you have seen at least one of our team members training for one of their sessions. You have most likely seen our founder, Ben Mayfield-Smith, helping clients with their technique, posing practice for a show, kicking up the intensity for his own session, or shooting one of our educational vlogs for the clients and team who watch our YouTube Channel. Collectively, our team and clients have trained at Powerhouse Gym Stafford for over 2+ years.
Coach Ben
Ben Mayfield-Smith is a specialist in competition preparation, nutrition, behavioural education, and elite performance programming.
With qualifications spanning Behavioural Science, psychology, sports nutrition, strength & conditioning, and acceptance and commitment therapy, Ben blends evidence-based protocols with real-world coaching experience. His philosophy is built on three core values: Purpose, Intensity, and Consistency; forged through a lifetime of competitive sport, personal setbacks, and resilience.
From rugby fields to overcoming major injury and personal loss, Ben has lived the lessons he now teaches: hard work, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of improvement. Through Matter Athletica, he channels those lessons into helping athletes and everyday people achieve body composition goals, master behaviour change, and unlock their full potential both inside and outside the gym.

1 / Initial Consultation ( Free)
From your free consultation, we will conduct a prep pre-screening; this is where we can assess your experience, interests, and the areas of life and training that make you tick mentally. No one successfully preps without mental preparation involved.
2 / Pre-Prep - Active Preparation
From here, we begin your programming and nutrition to enter a pre-prep phase and discover your growth and maintenance, monitoring your training intensity.
3 / Post Prep Health Phase & Life Integration
Post-prep comes next and is curated to successfully transition your body and headspace out of prep. You aren't left after stage day to your own devices and the reason for this is that too many athletes are, and it drastically affects their health long term and mental wellbeing. Physical and mental health and planned to transition you back into your routines and with a healthy relationship towards competition prep.
